The self-clean cycle heats an oven to very high temperatures for several hours. On an older range, that heat can be the last straw for a weak thermal fuse, a door lock motor or an aging control board. It is one of the most common times we get calls about ovens that suddenly will not heat or will not unlock.

For older ovens, consider cleaning by hand with a non-abrasive cleaner instead, or at least run self-clean when you are home and can turn it off if something seems wrong. If the door will not unlock after a cycle, let the oven cool completely and try turning the breaker off for a minute before calling.
