Refrigerator problems we see in Hillcrest

When a refrigerator in Hillcrest stops keeping temperature, the cause is usually airflow: a dirty condenser coil, a failing fan, or a defrost fault that lets ice block the evaporator. We test each before recommending parts.

Street parking can be tight, so a note about where the technician can park saves time on the day.

Top-freezer, French door, side-by-side and built-in: where each one tends to fail

Top-freezer models are the simplest. One evaporator in the freezer feeds cold air down to the fresh-food side through a damper, so a fridge that is warm while the freezer is fine often has a stuck damper or an iced-over air passage rather than a dying compressor.

Bottom-freezer and French door models put the freezer in a drawer and the fresh-food section on top. Many route cold air up a long duct in the back wall, and that duct can freeze shut when the defrost cycle fails. French doors add a center mullion flap that must flip into place to seal the two doors; when it sticks, the fridge sweats along the center and runs long. Door-mounted ice makers on these models are a frequent leak and frost source.

Side-by-side refrigerators have a narrow freezer that runs the full height of the cabinet, with ice and water in the door. The tall, narrow evaporator ices up readily, and the dispenser adds a water valve, a door water line and a fill tube, all of which can fail on their own.

Built-in and panel-ready refrigerators often use two separate evaporators, one for each compartment, sometimes with two compressors. That design holds humidity better in the fresh-food side, but it doubles the fans, sensors and defrost parts that can fail. The condenser usually sits on top behind a grille, where it collects kitchen grease and dust out of sight.
