Refrigerator problems we see in National City

When a refrigerator in National City stops keeping temperature, the cause is usually airflow: a dirty condenser coil, a failing fan, or a defrost fault that lets ice block the evaporator. We test each before recommending parts.

With Naval Base San Diego next door and frequent military moves, many rentals come with appliances left behind by a previous occupant; a model and serial number helps us source parts.

Reading the symptoms before you call

Freezer cold, fridge warm: think airflow first. A failed evaporator fan, a frozen-over evaporator from a defrost failure, or a stuck damper all produce this pattern. If you hear the compressor running but no fan noise when you press the door switch on the freezer side, the fan is a strong suspect.

Both sections warming up: look at the condenser side. A condenser fan that has stopped, coils packed with dust, or a compressor that clicks on and off without starting (often a start relay) will warm the whole cabinet.

Water on the floor or ice under the crisper drawers: usually a plugged defrost drain, a loose drain pan, or a leaking supply line or water valve. Sheet ice on the back wall of the fresh-food side points the same way.

Frost on food and ice around the door edge: a door gasket that is torn, flattened or not meeting the cabinet, or a door that does not close on its own because the cabinet is out of level.

Clicking every few minutes with no cooling: the compressor is trying to start and the overload is cutting it off. Sometimes the relay is the problem; sometimes the compressor itself is.
