Pulling a range out for repair
Many range repairs, including terminal blocks, power cords, rear wiring, some igniters and anything behind the back panel, require sliding the range away from the wall. That's straightforward on a freestanding range with a little room behind it, and more delicate on a slide-in hemmed in by stone countertop edges. We protect the floor, ease the range out, and check the gas connector and shutoff valve on the way.
Gas connectors are flexible metal hoses, and older uncoated ones or those that have been kinked repeatedly should be replaced rather than reused. The shutoff valve behind the range should turn freely; if it's frozen in place, that's worth knowing before you ever need to use it. On electric models, we look at the cord, the strain relief and the 240-volt receptacle, because loose connections there cause heat damage over time.
