What you can check yourself
Clean the lint screen and look at it under light; if water doesn't pass through it easily, wash it with warm water and dish soap to remove fabric softener film. With the dryer unplugged (and the gas valve turned off on a gas model if you'll be moving it far), slide the dryer out and look at the duct behind it. Replace any crushed or plastic duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal.
Then run the dryer on air only and go outside: you should feel strong airflow at the exhaust cap and see the flap open fully. If the flow is weak outside but strong at the back of the dryer with the duct removed, the run needs cleaning. Never put a screen over the exterior cap; it catches lint and blocks the exhaust. Leave anything involving the burner, gas line or 240-volt wiring to a technician, and if you ever smell gas, leave the house and call SDG&E or 911 from outside.
