Before you call: dryer trouble in Pacific Beach

With laundry in a garage or a hallway closet, dryer vent runs are often long or tightly bent, and lint buildup there is behind a lot of slow-drying complaints. We check the vent along with the dryer, because a new heating element won't fix a blocked duct.

For a vacation rental, let us know who will meet the technician and how to get in.

Symptoms and what's usually behind them

Drum turns, no heat at all: on electric models, usually an open thermal fuse, element or high-limit thermostat; on gas, the igniter or valve coils. A thermal fuse that blows is a symptom, not just a part. It opens because the dryer got too hot, and that almost always traces back to restricted airflow. Replacing the fuse without fixing the vent means another fuse soon.

Won't start, but the light and buzzer work: often the door switch, a broken belt (many dryers have a belt switch that stops the motor), or the start switch. Thumping or squealing: worn drum rollers, a tired idler pulley or a flat spot on the belt. A scraping noise near the front often points to worn drum glides or felt seals.

Clothes come out hot but still damp: the classic restricted-vent sign. Cycles end too soon with damp clothes: moisture sensor bars coated with dryer sheet residue. A burning smell needs attention right away; lint can collect around the heater housing, and that is a fire risk.
