In most models the cause is one of a few parts: the igniter, which should glow when the dryer calls for heat; the gas valve coils, which open the valve once the igniter is hot; or a flame sensor or thermal fuse that has failed. A restricted vent often blows the thermal fuse in the first place, so clearing the vent is part of the repair.
On many models you can watch through a small inspection hole near the burner. If the igniter glows and then goes dark without lighting the burner, the valve coils are a frequent suspect; if it never glows, the igniter, fuse or sensor is more likely. Leave the testing to us and do not disturb the gas connections. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call SDG&E or 911 from outside.
