Many homes here are modest single-story houses on ordinary lots, often with laundry in the garage. Apartment complexes and mobile-home parks add compact kitchens and stacked or closet laundry. Renters make up a good share of households, so a lot of appliances change hands as tenants move.
Older homes may also have older electrical and gas hookups, which can cause problems when a newer appliance is installed.

Dryer Hookups When You Move In
Electric dryers connect to either a three-prong or a four-prong outlet, depending on when the home was wired. Moving a dryer into a home with the other style means changing the cord, and the grounding strap inside the terminal block must be set correctly for that cord. A wrong setup can leave the cabinet energized.
Gas dryers need a gas line and a properly sized vent. If you are not sure what your laundry area supports, check before buying, or have the hookup confirmed when the dryer is installed.
If a dryer trips a breaker, runs without heat or sparks at the plug, stop using it until the cord, terminal block and outlet are checked. Scorch marks at the terminal block usually mean a loose connection.
Older Gas Connectors
Older ranges and dryers sometimes still use uncoated brass flexible connectors. These can crack with age and movement. If your gas appliance has one, replace it with a modern coated connector when the appliance is next pulled out.
Tenants moving in with their own appliances should check the connections in particular. If you smell gas after moving a range or dryer, turn off the appliance's gas valve, leave the house and call SDG&E or 911 from outside.
