What wears out cooktops in La Mesa

If a gas cooktop ever smells of gas, leave the house and call SDG&E or 911 from outside before anything else. Short of that, a burner that clicks but won't light is usually a dirty or cracked igniter, and an oven that won't heat is often a weak igniter or a failed element.

Many ranch homes keep the laundry and a second refrigerator in the garage, which is the hottest room in the house on a summer afternoon.

Radiant glass, induction, gas or coil: how each one works

Radiant smooth-tops have ribbon or halogen elements under the glass that glow red and heat the glass, which heats the pan. Each element has a limiter that cycles it off if the glass gets too hot, and an infinite switch or electronic control sets the power. A hot-surface light stays on until the glass cools.

Induction cooktops look similar but work differently. A copper coil under each zone creates a magnetic field that heats a magnetic pan directly; the glass only gets warm from the pan sitting on it. Power boards convert household current to the high-frequency current the coils need, a cooling fan keeps those boards from overheating, and pan-detection circuits shut the zone off when nothing magnetic is on it. Induction has become common in newer condos downtown, in UTC and in Mission Valley, often because buildings are all-electric or limit gas.

Gas cooktops use the same valve, spark-switch and spark-module arrangement as a gas range, but everything is packed into a shallower box under the countertop, often with a downdraft vent squeezed in nearby. Coil cooktops are the simplest: plug-in elements, receptacles and infinite switches.
