If a gas range ever smells of gas, leave the house and call SDG&E or 911 from outside before anything else. Short of that, a burner that clicks but won't light is usually a dirty or cracked igniter, and an oven that won't heat is often a weak igniter or a failed element.
Many rentals here are managed by landlords who handle appliance repairs, so check your lease before booking.

Faults that involve the whole range
Nothing works, no display, no burners, no oven: on an electric range, check both breakers; a tripped double-pole breaker, a loose cord connection at the terminal block, or a burned power cord are common causes. On a gas range, the outlet behind it may have lost power or the range may have come unplugged when it was moved.
Display works but nothing heats: a control board relay, a main thermal fuse, or on some models a door lock left engaged after self-clean, which blocks the whole range.
Range trips the breaker: a shorted element, a shorted wire touching the chassis, or a failed terminal block. Burned or melted connections at the back of an electric range are a fire risk and need attention before the range is used again.
Display scrambled or unresponsive after a power outage: surges when power returns can damage control boards. Try turning the breaker off for a minute first. If the range still misbehaves, the board or its power supply should be tested.
Range rocks, tilts or the oven door dips when opened: the anti-tip bracket may not be engaged, or a leg leveler has backed out. Fix this before anything else.
