What wears out stoves in Mid-City & College Area

If a gas stove ever smells of gas, leave the house and call SDG&E or 911 from outside before anything else. Short of that, a burner that clicks but won't light is usually a dirty or cracked igniter, and an oven that won't heat is often a weak igniter or a failed element.

Many rentals here are managed by landlords who handle appliance repairs, so check your lease before booking.

Clicking, no flame, weak flame: a symptom guide

Clicks but won't light, one burner only: the most common stove call there is. Usually the cap is off-center after cleaning, the ports are blocked, or the white ceramic igniter is wet from a boil-over. Dry it and try again in an hour.

Keeps clicking after the flame lights, or clicks with the knob off: moisture in a spark switch, often from liquid running down a knob stem after mopping the stovetop. Sometimes it dries out on its own. If it persists, the switch, or less often the spark module, needs replacing.

No clicking on any burner: check that the stove is plugged in (gas stoves still need power for ignition) and that its outlet works. Then suspect the spark module.

Flame lifts off the burner, is uneven, or only lights on one side: clogged ports or a cap that isn't seated. A burner that lights but has a big gap in its ring of flame almost always needs cleaning, not parts.

Yellow or orange flames: healthy gas flames are mostly blue with small darker-blue cones. A little orange flicker can come from dust or a cleaning spray nearby. Large, floppy yellow flames or soot on pans mean the air-gas mix is off and the stove should be checked before more use.

Burner won't simmer low without going out: the valve's low-flame setting may need adjustment, or the ports are partly blocked, which matters most at low gas flow.
