Before you call: dishwasher trouble in Golden Hill & Southeastern San Diego

San Diego's hard water is tough on dishwashers. Scale builds up on spray arms, the heating element and the inlet valve, and the first signs are a white film on glasses and dishes that come out less clean than they used to.

Older homes here often have narrow doorways and original hookups, so a note about where the appliance sits helps us plan.

Reading the symptoms

Standing water at the bottom after a cycle usually means the filter is packed, the drain hose is kinked or clogged, or the drain pump has failed. If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, a newly installed disposal with its knockout plug still in place will block the drain completely, and a disposal full of food waste can back up into the dishwasher.

Dishes coming out dirty with food still stuck on them point to the filter, the spray arms or the circulation pump. If the machine is noticeably quieter than it used to be during washing, the circulation pump may not be moving water. Dishes washed but still wet at the end usually trace to an empty rinse aid dispenser, a failed heating element or vent fan, or plastic-heavy loads, which never dry as well as glass and ceramic.

A dishwasher that won't start is often a door latch or switch problem rather than the control board. Leaks at the front usually come from the door gasket or from suds made by regular dish soap; leaks underneath come from the pump seal, the inlet connection or a cracked sump, and they can damage the floor and cabinet before anyone notices water.
