Sub-Zero freezer repair: what to know
Before any Sub-Zero freezer repair, it helps to know the hardware: Sub-Zero freezers come as built-in columns and as the freezer section of its over-and-under and side-by-side units, each with its own sealed system.
Expect the usual Sub-Zero freezer suspects: evaporator fan, defrost system, ice maker, and door gasket. On a service call, the description is usually one of these: freezer warming up, frost on the back panel, and ice maker stopped. A freezer column that is cold at the bottom but frosty at the back wall usually has a defrost problem rather than a compressor problem. A freezer that cycles on and off every few minutes may have a failing thermostat or an overheating compressor tripping its overload.
Sub-Zero freezer columns and sections have their own evaporators, fans and defrost systems, so frost buildup or warm spots point to those components rather than the refrigerator side. Ice makers in these units depend on clean water supply and proper freezer temperature. Repairs are usually worthwhile because of the unit's long design life and installation cost.
Most standalone freezers here live in the garage, and an East County garage in August is a hard place for a freezer not rated for that heat. We test the thermostat or control, the start components and the defrost circuit, then discuss the compressor only if those pass.
A Sub-Zero with a warm fresh-food section and a cold freezer has a problem in one of its two sealed systems, so the freezer side is no clue to the fault. We price the ice maker and similar repairs in writing before any work starts.
Defrost manual-defrost models before the frost layer passes a quarter inch. Have the model and serial ready when you call about door not sealing; it lets us check parts first.
