GE washer repair: what to know
Before any GE washer repair, it helps to know the hardware: GE sells agitator and impeller top-loaders and front-loaders, including Profile models with built-in detergent dispensing and a UltraFresh vent on front-loaders.
Expect the usual GE washer suspects: lid lock assemblies, drain pumps, shift actuators on top-loaders, and door boot seals on front-loaders. Owners typically call us about one of these: top-loader stops before the spin cycle, front-loader shows a drain error, and lid lock or door lock fault. A top-loader that fills and agitates but will not spin is often a lid lock that is not reading closed, so watch whether the lock light comes on before the spin. A loud roar that rises with spin speed points to tub bearings, and that diagnosis changes the repair math.
GE top-loaders with impellers rely on a shift actuator to change between wash and spin, so a machine that agitates but never spins can be the actuator rather than the motor or lid lock. Front-loaders share the usual drain pump and boot seal issues, and odor complaints are usually residue rather than a fault. A worn drive motor or tub bearing on an older top-loader is where repair cost starts to rival replacement.
With SDG&E time-of-use rates, many people run the washer overnight, so a slow leak can run for hours before anyone sees it. On a washer call we check the drain filter, door lock or lid switch, inlet screens and suspension before opening the cabinet.
Parts for current GE, Profile and Café models move through a large national distribution network and are usually a few days out, while trim and control parts for older models can take longer. We price the shift actuators on top-loaders and similar repairs in writing before any work starts.
Do not overload the drum, and use the right amount of HE detergent; too much soap causes more problems than too little. Have the model and serial ready when you call about loud banging during spin; it lets us check parts first.
