Whirlpool washer repair: what to know
Before any Whirlpool washer repair, it helps to know the hardware: Whirlpool top-load washers come with agitators or low-profile impellers, and its front-loaders share parts with Maytag models.
Expect the usual Whirlpool washer suspects: lid lock assembly failure, drive motor or shifter faults, drain pump clogs, and inlet valve screens choked with scale. On a service call, the description is usually one of these: lid lock error and no spin, washer not draining, and stuck on sensing at the start. If a top-load Whirlpool flashes the lid light and will not spin, make sure nothing is caught at the lid latch before assuming the lock has failed. A front-loader that smells musty usually has residue in the door boot and drain pump area, not a mechanical fault.
Whirlpool top-loaders use a lid lock that the control tests at the start of spin, so a lid that is slightly out of alignment can stop the cycle as surely as a failed lock. On low-profile impeller models, the shifter and motor are separate parts, and a washer that agitates but will not spin can be either one. Front-loaders share pumps, bearings and boot seals with Maytag, which keeps parts easy to find.
Laundry in the garage is common in San Diego tract homes, which means dust, temperature swings and, near the coast, salt air on the washer's cabinet and wiring. On a washer call we check the drain filter, door lock or lid switch, inlet screens and suspension before opening the cabinet.
When a Whirlpool top-load washer will not spin or agitate, a failed lid switch or lid lock is a more common cause than the motor. We price the drain pump clogs and similar repairs in writing before any work starts.
Do not overload the drum, and use the right amount of HE detergent; too much soap causes more problems than too little. Have the model and serial ready when you call about slow fill; it lets us check parts first.
