If the microwave runs but leaves food cold, stop using it and book a repair, since the high-voltage parts inside are not safe to open. Sparking inside often comes from a damaged waveguide cover or metal in the cavity.

Smart Inverter models use an inverter board instead of a traditional transformer, so a no-heat fault may be the board rather than the magnetron, and both must be tested safely after discharge. Over-the-range units also carry vent fans, lights and dampers that fail independently of the cooking circuit. A magnetron or inverter board on an older countertop unit is rarely worth it, while an over-the-range unit is often worth fixing because of the installation cost.
