Traulsen engineering, briefly
Traulsen is a commercial refrigeration brand owned by ITW Food Equipment Group, with roots in New York going back to 1938. It makes heavy-duty reach-in and roll-in refrigerators, freezers, prep tables and blast chillers for restaurants and institutions. It is common in hospitals, schools and high-volume restaurants that need long-lasting cold storage.
On the bench, we pay attention to stainless reach-in and roll-in cabinets, electronic controllers with alarms, self-closing doors with stay-open features, and blast chillers. Traulsen units run continuously in hot kitchens, so most temperature complaints trace to dirty condenser coils or worn door gaskets rather than refrigerant loss.
San Diego factors that matter for Traulsen owners
Traulsen reach-ins in East County kitchens see high ambient heat in summer, and Santa Ana wind outages can leave food at risk and stress controllers when power returns. Summer heat inland and humid, salty air at the coast both push Traulsen commercial equipment harder, and dirty condensers are the common thread in the breakdowns we see.
Hard water is the slow problem for Traulsen owners here: mineral scale builds in valves, screens and spray passages for years before anyone notices performance dropping. That is why a Traulsen diagnosis in Point Loma and one in La Mesa can start from different suspects.
Common Traulsen failure points
Across the Traulsen line, the recurring problems are door gaskets and hinges under constant use, condenser coil fouling, evaporator fan motors, controller and sensor faults, and freezer defrost heaters.
For Traulsen refrigerators, the usual suspects are condenser coil fouling, door gasket wear, evaporator fan motor failure, and controller and sensor faults. For Traulsen ice makers, the usual suspects are scale buildup in the ice machine, water inlet valve faults, drain clogs, and condenser fouling. On Traulsen freezers, expect defrost heater or timer faults, door gasket and heater faults, evaporator fan motor failure, and condenser fouling.
Error codes on a Traulsen point to a circuit, not a part. We read the code, then test the sensor, wiring and load it refers to before ordering anything.
Owner checks for Traulsen appliances
Clean condenser coils on a regular schedule and inspect door gaskets for tears, since both are leading causes of temperature failures. Commercial operators get the best return from scheduled coil cleaning, gasket checks and water treatment logged on a calendar. With hard water, change filters on schedule, clean inlet screens and descale where the manual allows it.
Write down any error code and when it appears; on a Traulsen that narrows the diagnosis before we arrive.
Sourcing Traulsen parts
Traulsen parts come through ITW's commercial parts network, and most common parts are available quickly while special items may take a few days. Scheduled cleaning on a Traulsen unit costs far less than an emergency call during a busy service.
Traulsen units are built for long commercial lives, so repairs are usually worth it, especially compared to downtime and replacement cost. The estimate is written and agreed before we start; parts carry 90 days of coverage and labor 30.
Looking for model numbers, recall notices or warranty registration? Those live on the manufacturer's own site: Traulsen official site. We are an independent repair company and are not affiliated with Traulsen.
