Who makes Vulcan, and why it matters when one breaks
Vulcan is a commercial cooking brand owned by ITW Food Equipment Group, making restaurant ranges, convection ovens, griddles, fryers and steamers. Its equipment is found in restaurant, hotel and institutional kitchens. Its customers are restaurants, hotels, schools and other institutional kitchens.
Hardware worth knowing about includes heavy-duty restaurant ranges with open burners, gas and electric convection ovens, thermostatic griddles and hot tops, and standing pilots and electronic ignition. On Vulcan equipment with standing pilots, a burner that will not stay lit is usually a dirty pilot or a weak thermocouple, not a gas valve.
Vulcan trouble spots, appliance by appliance
Brand-wide, Vulcan's weak spots are pilot assemblies and thermocouples, oven thermostats, gas safety valves, convection fan motors, and door hinges and springs on heavy doors.
On Vulcan ovens, expect convection fan motor, oven thermostat, gas safety valve, and door switch. On Vulcan stoves, expect clogged burner ports, pilot outage, burner valve wear, and grate damage. For Vulcan ranges, the usual suspects are oven pilot and thermocouple, oven thermostat, safety valve, and door hinge.
Before a Vulcan control board is condemned, we measure the supply and check the installation. A board replaced because of a loose neutral or a kinked drain hose just fails again.
How the county's climate and water affect Vulcan
San Diego restaurant kitchens run hottest in the summer tourist season, when Vulcan ranges and convection ovens are pushed to full duty for long days, and grease buildup on burners and pilots adds up fast. For San Diego restaurants, bars and cafés, a Vulcan failure on a hot Friday is a revenue problem, and coastal kitchens add salt air to the usual grease and heat.
Restaurant and bar operators across the county run Vulcan equipment long hours in warm rooms, so preventive coil and gasket service pays off quickly. We service Vulcan across the county, from La Jolla to La Mesa.
Keeping a Vulcan running longer
Clean pilot and burner ports weekly and have oven thermostats checked for calibration on a regular schedule. Commercial operators get the best return from scheduled coil cleaning, gasket checks and water treatment logged on a calendar.
When you call, have the model and serial, the symptom, and when it started; a photo of any error code helps too.
Vulcan repair economics
Vulcan parts move through commercial food equipment distributors, and common pilots, thermocouples and thermostats are usually easy to get. Commercial installations of Vulcan equipment also have to satisfy health-code and gas-safety requirements that a home kitchen does not.
Vulcan commercial equipment is built to be rebuilt, so repair is almost always the right call unless the oven body or cavity is badly damaged. You approve a written estimate before work begins, and the repair is covered for 90 days on parts and 30 days on labor.
Looking for model numbers, recall notices or warranty registration? Those live on the manufacturer's own site: Vulcan official site. We are an independent repair company and are not affiliated with Vulcan.
